SHOT Show 2013 Destinee’s First Shots through a Springfield EMP
It’s no secret that I have a fondness for 1911 style firearms, which makes it somewhat surprising that, until now, I had never fired a Springfield EMP. This sweet-looking 9mm has all the ergonomics I’ve come to love, but shrunk down into a pocket pistol that packs 9+1 rounds of 9x19mm.
The EMP also happens to be a very fine-looking shooting iron (I love guns with good two-tone finishes). The skeletonized hammer and trigger and checkered cocobolo wood grips are fine touches that give the aluminum frame and steel slide a classy finish.
Looks aside, the Springfield EMP handles as you’d expect from a 1911-style Springer – at least as far as first impressions go. I fired a few rounds and had no problem controlling the grip of the narrow nine was no problem. Nor was it any struggle to put the rounds where I wanted.
The little teaser I got with shooting those few rounds whet my curiousity to see how well it handles after some full review. Plus, I already know that shooting the Springfield EMP is fun.
It’s subjective, but I prefer metal pistols over polymer-framed (nothing wrong with them – and I own a couple of my own). They feel easier to control, and the weight makes them [generally] easier for me to keep steady. Although, the single stack 1911s I’ve developed a fondness for often fall short of their double stack counterparts. The EMP seems to be a fair balance between size and capacity. With dimensions of 6.5in long by 5in tall and about 1.2in wide compared to the Glock 26′s (holds 10 rounds of 9mm per mag) 6.4in long, 4.2in tall, and about 1.2in wide.
From what I’ve seen, it may be a good option for a CCW 9mm. What do you think?
