SHOT Show 2013 XD-S 9mm Media Day at the Range
Don’t blink – you’ll miss the XD-S 9mm.
I know, it’s a short video, but as I mentioned before, I was restricted in how much I could shoot. I’ve done some test and eval for Springfield before (check out my review on the Springfield XD-S in .45 ACP), so the guys at Springfield’s Media Day range booth were gracious enough to let me shoot a little bit more than the standard fare for the day. But, it was still Media Day, and gracious or no, there were still folks in line behind me who wanted a little trigger time with Springfield’s new nine. At least I was able to establish some first impressions.
Because I have experience with the .45 version, I wasn’t expecting something wildly different with the XD-S 9mm. That expectation was spot-on. The 9mm version of the XD-S looks and feels just like the .45. When shooting it, I noted one great difference, though: perceived recoil. Not unsurprisingly, the XD-S 9mm has a notably gentler recoil experience than the .45 model. So, those who found the original .45 design favorable for concealed carry but snappy in range performance may find the pocket 9mm preferable.
The XD-S 9mm design is so remarkably similar to its .45 predecessor that I don’t have much else to note about how it feels in comparison. So, when I visit Springfield Armory’s booth on the SHOT Show exhibition floor later in the week, I’ll be sure to include a more thorough comparison of the features of the two models.
